GPSC joins hand with GC to launch the biggest Smart Energy Storage System in Thailand to increase energy efficiency and stability

In cooperation with GC, GPSC co-developed a 1.5MWh smart Energy Storage System (ESS), which is the largest Li-ION ESS in Thailand to date. The ESS was placed in GC Rayong Innovation Center not only to reduce the cost of electricity, but also to increase the reliability of power system. This ESS project is considered the first large scale Energy Storage in PTT Group, and as a Power Flagship of PTT Group, GPSC will continue to implement the innovative ESSs to enhance energy efficiency and energy stability for industrial users in Map Ta Put and Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi).

Mr.Chawalit Tippawanich, President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, said that the company had joined hand with PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited or GC to develop the largest Energy Storage System (ESS) at the Science & Innovation Centre of GC in Rayong province. The ESS project was designed to store up to 1.5 megawatt-hour (MWh), which is currently the biggest LI-ION energy storage capacity for industrial usage in Thailand. The ESS has been implemented, resulting in optimization as well as stability of the power system.

"This ESS project is the first milestone towards our aspiration to become the innovative power flagship of PTT. With the implementation of ESS, the users can enjoy the lower cost of electricity production, the increase of reliability in the power system, and the higher portion of renewable energy usage." Said Mr. Chawalit

The 1.5 MWh ESS, installed at the area of the Science & Innovation Centre of GC, will allow the Gas engine to always run at rated Capacity, despite swinging electricity demand. The access electricity production then will be stored in the ESS to be used during the peak demand time at 0.25MW for 4 non-stop hours. This will allow optimization of the gas engine and reduce GC’s gas cost per unit of electricity production. Moreover, the stored electricity can serve as an emergency power supply during blackouts, creating additional savings compared to buying from other sources. Overall, the ESS will save costs, while enhancing the reliability and the efficiency of power system at Rayong Innovation Center to the next level.

The project between GPSC and GC is just the beginning. GPSC aims to provide Smart Energy Storage Solutions to GPSC’s current customers as well as other industrial users in Map Ta Put and Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovations to align with Thailand 4.0 policy for sustainable economic growth.
